Laundry Detergent – Is It Your Problem?

Our Toxic World

Some brands of laundry detergents contain chemicals such as 1, 4 dioxane which is a synthetic chemical that is known to cause cancer. This should make you consider using “green” products from a health food store. But the key bottom line question is: How can you tell if your detergent is bothering you or your loved ones? Here are some clues to help you.

Do you get sick in any way when in contact with your present detergent? Do you get ill from walking down the aisle in the store where these soaps are located? Sensitivities can be much more than hay fever, asthma or itchy rash. Some people develop fatigue, headaches, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, an inability to think clearly, problems writing, walking or talking, depression, joint or muscle pain, and even irregular heart beat or high blood pressure. If you notice such symptoms, it helps to get away from the smell and breathe fresh air. If the symptoms are severe, some people need to inhale oxygen in an emergency room.

If you have a chemical sensitivity it is not unusual to notice that a wide variety of chemical smells seem to cause symptoms.  It is possible for a fabric softener or bleach to also cause symptoms when you are doing the laundry.  If these are factors you might notice the day you change the sheets you cannot sleep well at night. Some people wheeze or develop hay fever from freshly laundered sheets because of what’s left on linens. Many persons are also sensitive to items such as perfume, scented body products, gasoline in your car or a leaky natural gas furnace, stove or hot water heater. Any of these exposures can make you ill in some way

The next clue is that you can smell odors before anyone else. Others insist you are wrong, but you are not. The sense of smell can become hyper-acute when you are chemically sensitive.

Many people who are sensitive to chemicals, in time notice that certain foods also seem to bother them. Some food sensitivities can be helped in 15 minutes  by taking 1-2 tsp of baking soda in a half glass of water.
